Taylor Haskins - trumpeter / composer

"Metaview" review- Cadence Magazine, April 2007

Trumpeter Taylor Haskins leads a vibrant quintet on this session, which features his own compositions in an affair of originality and dramatic flair. Reaching out to jazz's modern mainstream, he pushes with plenty of rhythmic excitement, purity of tone, a variety of textures, and creative interaction among the performers. Adam Rogers provides a unique guitar sound that lifts the session significantly. He and Haskins team up for one rollicking adventure after another that explode when saxophonist Andrew Rathbun joins the fray. Together, the quiintet's front line carries refreshing new music on it's shoulders with spirit. Double bassist Matt Penman provides a staggering walk, while drummer Mark Ferber accents with pleasant surprises around each corner. Haskins loves the interaction that he gets from this quintet. They play as if they've been together for a lifetime. Each knows what the other is thinking.

Haskins is from New Hampshire and is now based in Brooklyn, New York. Hi trumpet studies include a bachelor's degree in '94 and a master's degree in '96. In 1997, he was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition. He's 'paid his dues' with several significant East Coast bands and has contributed winning compositions to the television and motion picture industries. This album is his second as a leader. The trumpeter's original music creates fresh impressions that last; they're unforgettable. "Trance Dance" takes you into a far-off land where automobiles, television sets, and video games have yet to enter the realm. "Patience" gives one the ammunition to carry on in spite of the usual obstacles, while "Call Me Tomorrow" drives with a spunky attitude. The organ sound on "Nyah" gives it a soulful feel. Other selections provided equally memorable reflections from this highly recommended album by an original voice. - Jim Santella
